On Oct 1, 2026, instructors from the POP partners Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) presented the tutorial “Introduction to High Performance Computing and Performance Metrics and Tools” at the ACM womENcourage 2026 conference in Sophia Antipolis, France.
This inclusive conference addresses students, early-career researchers, educators, practitioners, managers and leaders who care about both technical excellence and human sustainability. Under the theme “Unmute Yourself, Grow Stronger Together. Listen to Your Inner Voice and Walk on Your Own Path for Well-being in Computing”, the program included poster presentations, international networking opportunities for early-career participants, sessions translating research on well-being, resilience, and inclusion into practice, and spaces for peer mentoring and informal exchange.

As part of this programme, the POP tutorial provided a technical session on HPC and performance analysis. Seventeen people attended, most of whom were female students from Europe. The 90-minute tutorial began with an introduction to High Performance Computing suitable for beginners, followed by an introduction to performance analysis covering performance concepts, metrics, and measurement techniques. The session concluded with a demonstration of performance analysis using the JSC tools Score-P, Scalasca and Cube. Participants appreciated the technically focused session aimed at beginners in HPC, and feedback was positive. The slides of the tutorial are available here.
