From March 12 to 23, 2018, POP staff at High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) organized a workshop for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the EXPERTISE European project. EXPERTISE is the acronym of 'models, EXPeriments and high PERformance computing for Turbine mechanical integrity and Structural dynamics in Europe'. EXPERTISE research activity is focused on the development of advanced tools for the dynamics analysis of large-scale models of turbine components to pave the way towards the virtual testing of the entire machine (i.e. whole engine simulations).
The ESRs of EXPERTISE have started their PhD degrees a couple of months ago in partner HPC research centers and companies such as Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) and Cray inc. The ESRs had various degrees of knowledge about performance analysis for HPC applications. Hence, the workshop came in the context of increasing the knowledge of future researchers in state of the art performance analysis tools and methods. During the two weeks of the workshop, the ESRs were introduced to POP team and mission, got familiar with the performance analysis process and learnt important theoretical performance analysis concepts for modern HPC applications. In addition to that, they had the chance to apply these concepts in a practical context by measuring the performance metrics of real HPC applications on HLRS supercomputer, Hazel Cray. The workshop had also some sessions about how to interpret these performance metrics, recommend optimizations strategies based on them and write professional performance
analysis documents and reports.
